The major social media channels I participate in are Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn and I do have some presence on some other social media sites such as Flickr, Slideshare, Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Technorati and a few 10 Ways To Drive Traffic To Your Blog Using A Social Media Channel

others.

So when I come across ways to optimize either of these social media channels to improve my social media marketing my eyes dilate.

LinkedIn is often overlooked in the Facebook frenzy so here is my favourite post of the week with some tips on how to optimize your LinkedIn account (it has 60 million active members with an average wage of over $100,000 a year).

Also I have included 3 other resources I discovered in the past week that may provide some food for thought including an online video and a slideshare presentation on social media.

1. 10 WaysTo  Use LinkedIn To Drive Traffic To Your Blog

I came across this double post on John Chow’s Blog by guest bloggers Steve and  Hani from ‘Blogging For Coaches‘ which has some great tips for bloggers.

The first post  ‘5 Ways to drive Traffic to Your Blog With LinkedIn‘ had one tip with the headline ‘Get More Eye Balls on Your Profilethat caught my eye

There are a few ways to do this. The first way is to join LinkedIn Groups. This is similar to online forums. Once you join a group, you want to participate in the Group Discussions. Each time you comment in a group, a link to your profile pops up so that other users can click back to your profile and check you out. Participating in groups is a great way to network and get more eyeballs on your profile”.

The second posts ‘5 More Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Blog From LinkedIn highlight is number 3 Add More “High Profile” Connectionswhere they make this suggestion

To increase your Connections and your 2nd and 3rd Tier Connections make a point of connecting to people who have a high profile. These could be other blog owners or anyone who is a person of influence in your industry and has a lot of followers.

They might not know you from a hole in the ground so here’s an easy way to Connect with them on LinkedIn. It’s always a good idea to include an introduction message so that these high profile connections know who you are.

Let’s say you want to connect with John Chow. You could do that by introducing yourself and saying, ” Hey John, I’ve been an avid reader of your blog and Newsletter for over a year. I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn. Your name.”

This is much more effective than just using the default message because now John has an idea of how I came to find his profile on LinkedIn.” ..

2. How Much Does it Cost To Reach A Facebook User

It is more cost effective to use Facebook to advertise than Google so this interesting post by Kim-Mai Cutler at Venturebeat.com provides some insight into the costs and how they vary if you are considering active sponsored marketing on Facebook to target your market demographic.. read more

3. Partnering In A Social World

This slideshare presentation provides some food for thought on how some of the major brands are using social media as well as some revealing numbers on the growth of mobile internet users.

4.How the Internet Enables Intimacy

I often have conversations at dinner parties where the discussion quite often turns to how  Social media and technology can reduce real face to face communications and minimize meaningful relationships, whereas my experience has shown to me that this is not the case.

Stefana Broadbent’s says  that “We worry that IM, texting, Facebook are spoiling human intimacy, but Stefana Broadbent’s research shows how communication tech is capable of cultivating deeper relationships, bringing love across barriers like distance and workplace rules“. view her online Video presentation.. by clicking here or on the image below.

I don’t know about you, but I think Social Media is something to be embraced and taken seriously. As I slowly but surely learn my ways, I’m also helping friends with small business grasp the different channels and point out possibilities for them to reach out to more future clients and keeping existing ones.

Lately I’ve had a few acquaintances suggest that I act as sort of a social media initiator to those who have little to no experience with it. I’m considering it, something new to challenge myself with and it is inline with my wanting to help others. What do you think?
